Long Ditton Infant And Nursery School

The Heart of Long Ditton since 1911

Values and Ethos

It is very important to everyone who works in our school that we understand 'why we are here'. At the beginning of each year we return to our Mission Statement and Values to make sure they align with our beliefs and are fit for purpose.

Mission Statement

"We work together to create a happy, safe environment that provides the opportunity for everyone to be the best they can be.  Our mission is to develop confidence, resilience, creativity and a life long love of learning for all of our community. Welcome to our school where each individual is important to everyone."

Community - “Where every child is important to everyone”

We provide a warm, happy and safe environment where both our teachers and children enrich each other’s learning experiences. Our school is a place where we have a shared love of learning and where we embrace, celebrate and learn from all our differences whilst learning to co-exist in a mutually respectful environment. We are committed to maintaining high standards and ensure that families have the very best support to enable their children to be the best they can be.

Community Intention: To work in genuine partnership with families, parents, staff, Governors and the wider community to ensure the best education for our children

Confidence - “Belief in yourself and your abilities”

We believe that building a child’s confidence is at the heart of their education and a key life skill. We build a child’s confidence in many different ways starting with our gentle enrolment into school and gradually building up to performing to friendly audiences. Confidence is about learning to get along with others, being confident in our own abilities, being able to voice our opinion as well as being able to try new things knowing it is ok to get things wrong. We want our children to be proud of their achievements and recognise what they need to do to improve. We believe our children enjoy learning in our school and hope to instil confidence in them in order that they will be able to tackle situations positively throughout their life.

Confidence Intention: To ensure all our pupils develop into successful learners and achieve their full potential through high quality purposeful teaching

Learning- “Curiosity keeps leading us down new paths”

We believe the most precious gift we can give our children is a lifelong love of learning. Through our child led learning approach we actively encourage our children to express their ideas and creativity. Our children learn to have the confidence to take risks, step out of their comfort zone, try new things and even embrace mistakes as learning opportunities. By providing interesting topics our skills based learning and creative curriculum weeks are designed to stimulate and excite our children switching on their curiosity and desire to learn.

Learning Intention: To challenge, support and develop our staff to create an outstanding workforce that inspires each other and children to love learning

Nurture - “What you plant now you will harvest later”

We nurture our children’s learning through carefully structured routines that provide a balance of active learning and teaching. We focus on supporting positive emotional and social growth as well as cognitive development at the level of the individual child by responding to each child in a developmentally appropriate way. We understand that what we provide for our children will have an impact on their future learning. This is why we feel it is crucial to support them in order to achieve positive outcomes.

Nurture Intention: To nurture & develop every child to be healthy, happy and to become responsible and caring members of the community

Creativity-“If you can dream it, you can do it”

Creativity is at the heart of our learning and we firmly believe that it encourages a fascination for tasks and produces excited, enthusiastic and curious learners. We offer a variety of creative learning opportunities in an exciting and stimulating atmosphere where our children can laugh, have ideas and spark off each other. Creativity helps to give our children the skills, ability and confidence to enable them to work imaginatively and to transfer and apply new knowledge in different contexts.

Creativity Intention: To provide for every child an enjoyable curriculum in a high quality, stimulating environment

Living Values and Celebrating Difference

As a Living Values school community we chose 11 Values which we teach, one each month, to help children to understand and develop the language they need to understand what it means to be human.

British Values are supported through our working with the 11 chosen Values which are:

Love, Tolerance, Courage, Cooperation, Appreciation, Responsibility, Resilience, Peace, Respect, Honesty and Friendship.

We are constantly working to make our school a very inclusive school that celebrates everyone’s difference. It really doesn’t matter where you’re from, your religion, whether you’re short, tall, 5 or 35. We want to teach our children the importance of ‘being yourself, being different’. We all have amazing stories to tell – we might have famous relatives, be judo experts or have secret talents – we are all unique and most importantly, all very different.

We want the school community to celebrate the fact that children are all different, all unique and all very special. Every day we learn something new about them. The values we share at our school help our children to accept each other for what they are, to understand that we’re all meant to be different and to develop a lifelong passion for learning about each other and the world around us.
